Well, thanks to a relaxing day off work I was able to finish my corset. I'm really pleased with how it turned out since it is my first attempt. I even added lacing holes to the sides so that I will be able to tie the farthingale onto the corset. Sometime in the next week I'll get around to adding tie-on shoulder straps to it.
As you can see from the back pictures (click 'read more' to see the pics), it laces completely shut - which wasn't expected. I'm thinking that I will eventually cut it up the front so that it laces from both the front and back. That would be useful as I'll be able to lace myself into the corset rather than needing Ken to do it each time I get dressed.
Next up on the agenda - Spanish hood/veil out of velvet and silk satin and marking out the embroidery for the muff.
Full body front view: SUCCESS! Only a slight rumple near the waist, but other than that the corset provides support and a smooth flat front.
Side View: There is a wrinkle over my hip. Clearly in the next version I 'll need to use some stronger boning at that point. The 2 dots near my hip are the lacing holes for the farthingale (when it gets made).
Back View: The lacing holes are all hand-sewn. I did bone the outer edge, but elected not to put any further boning in the back - big mistake judging from all the wrinkles. That said, who really cares?! No one but Ken will see the corset when it is worn.

In looking at it now...I do care about the wrinkles in the back. That said, this is just 'Corset version 1.0' and a definitely learning process. When time allows, I want to make a new corset. In the meantime, I could cut it up the front and sides, take the binding off, add boning, and lacing holes up the front and sides so that it is fully adjustable (since my weight is in flux at the moment). Hmmm.....sooooo many projects, so little time!
ReplyDeleteGreetings Esperanza,
ReplyDeleteYou might try just shortening this version and cutting the hip area where the wrinkle is higher over the hipline.
Otherwise an excellent first try!
